Weekly Base Bulletin

Health Alert

Health Department Needs Help Finding the Individual Who Dropped off a Sick
Bat at the Humane Society The Health Department needs to make contact ASAP
with a person who left a sick bat in the drop box at the Humane Society of
The Pikes Peak Region on Sunday night, August 15. The bat was left with an
anonymous note that read "bat hurt please help". The bat was submitted for
testing and has been found to be rabid. The Health Department has issued a
press release and is working with media outlets to spread the word in our
community. This unidentified person who dropped off the bat and anyone else
who might have handled this bat needs to be evaluated promptly for rabies
post exposure prophylaxis. In the United States, distinct strains of rabies
virus have been identified in raccoons, skunks, foxes, coyotes and bats.
Rabies is transmitted through the bite and virus-containing saliva of an
infected host. If you are bitten by an animal immediately wash the wound
with soap and water and report to your nearest medical treatment facility.
If you become aware of any information regarding this situation that might
help us locate this person, please contact the Schriever Public Health
office or Colorado Health Department's Communicable Disease Program as soon
as possible. Health Department Information Schriever Public Health
