National Red Ribbon Week (23-31 October 2010)

Red Ribbon Week is a national drug prevention week observed annually
during the last week of October. This year marks the 25th anniversary of
the death of Federal Drug Enforcement Agent, Enrique "Kiki" Camarena who
dedicated his life to fight against the devastation caused by drug
trafficking and drug abuse in our communities. Enrique Camarena wanted
to make a difference even though he was only one person. He joined the
Drug Enforcement (DEA)Administration because this was the best way he
knew to stop the proliferation of drugs into the communities. In 1985,
the DEA sent Kiki to work undercover in Mexico and lived among the drug
cartel, gathering information and evidence. He infiltrated drug
trafficking bands and successfully helped break up many of them,
confiscating thousands of pounds of cocaine and hundreds of thousands of
pounds of marijuana. Kiki was so close unlocking a multibillion dollar
drug-pipeline, but his identity was discovered. One month later his body
was discovered in a shallow grave tortured, beaten and brutally murdered
by the drug cartel. Today, the Red Ribbon is worn to symbolize Mr.
Camarena's belief that one person can make a difference and we should
continue his legacy against illegal drugs and eradicate them out of our
communities. During this campaign, we can make a difference just like
Enrique "Kiki" Camarena by getting involved in your community,
participating in activities at your local school districts and educating
your children at an early age the dangers of illegal drugs and continue
to support a drug-free lifestyle.
